A few summers ago, I taught a two week training session on new technology to use in the classroom. It was a great experience and I was glad to share information with other teachers around the state on how to best reach our students today. You all grew up in a world filled with technology and it is important that we as teachers make sure you are fully prepared for the outside world. When I took this course four years ago, I also decided to develop a webpage to open up communication between students, parents and myself. I really look forward to using this webpage to keep you up to date on what is going on inside the classroom. I also have a blog on the webpage in which I will keep you updated. Please check it often and discover what I have put on my webpage. I will add things as much as I can and hope this will help your child be successful this year in US history. However, please be advised that I will not be able to update this 24/7. Please be patient and I will try to do what I can to make this successful.
Key Concept of Course:
This course is designed to broaden your understanding of United States history. It is very important to understand the past happenings of our country and relate those to the present day. We will start by taking a look at the origins of the United States and how this great land came about. By the end of the year we will have studied United States history up until the 1820s. The American Revolution will be covered in depth and we will also focus on key documents and primary sources from the different time periods. Technology will be a key component of the course and students will be learning new programs such as moviemaker and photo story.
Structure of the Course
This course will be taught in a number of different ways. Lectures (powerpoint notes), group work, short writing assignments, tests and projects will all be a part of this course. We will also view many films and listen to music from the different time periods. These will all help aid in the learning process. If you do all of your assignments to the best of your ability and are willing to learn each and every class period you will set yourself up for success in this course.
Student Expectations
These are my expectations of you:
1. Come to class each day prepared and ready to learn. (Book, notebook, pen must be brought EVERYDAY!!!!) I will not give out pens or pencils. If you do not have one you are unprepared for class and will take the penalty.
2. RESPECT your classmates opinions. Class discussions are a key component to history courses and we can only do these if everyone cooperates with the rules. At no time will I tolerate making fun of another student or anything of that nature. Consequences will be handed out to students who partake in this behavior.
3. Shouting out answers without raising your hand is a recipe for a class detention. When you wish to speak, raise your hand and wait to be called on.
4. You have 4 minutes to get from one class to the next. This is plenty of time. If you are late for class you will be given a class detention. Passing time is not for talking in the hall to your friends.
5. When the bell rings you need to be in your assigned seat ready for class to begin.
6. You can achieve anything by trying. Sitting at your desk saying this is too hard without trying first does not go over well with me and your grade will suffer with this type of attitude. Try your best and give a great effort and I guarantee you will succeed in my class this year.
7. Learning can be fun and I will do my best to make it that way.
After School Help
It is my job as a teacher to make sure you understand the material before moving on to a new topic. I will be available after school at anytime, except Fridays. Simply let me know during the morning that you need to stay after and I will arrange it.
Make-up Work
If you are out sick, it is your responsibility to come to me the next day you are in school to find out what you missed. This is a new concept for most of you. I will not chase you down. You will simply receive a zero the day you are out if you do not ask me for makeup work. All tests missed must be made up within one week or it will be a zero.
Class Rules
Refer to your handbook for school rules. All school rules apply in my classroom along with the following:
I have three simple rules in my classroom.
Stay seated, raise your hand, and speak only when appropriate.
If you follow these simple rules we will have a great time this year and you will be a successful student.
No Yankee Zone!
As most of you know, I am a big sports fan. In my classroom, there will be no wearing of Yankee shirts. Room 204 is a Yankee free zone! Red Sox apparel is encouraged!!!
